From Our Dean

Welcome to the Graduate School of Economics and Faculty of Economics!

Greetings from Professor and Dr. Hideo Tanaka, Dean of the Graduate School of Economics and Faculty of Economics.

The Kyoto University Graduate School of Economics was established in 1919, and we marked our 90th anniversary in 2009. Throughout our history, we have made it our principle to maintain academic freedom and to develop the spirit of independence in students as well as teachers.

Professors of Economics at Kyoto University began to publish the monthly Japanese academic journal KEIZAI RONSO in 1914 and then launched the first western language academic journal in Economics, The Kyoto University Economic Review. It was very important for professors to maintain international communications with the academics in western countries in the 1920s through 1930s and even during the Second World War.

We have been known especially by the memories of two great economists, Kawakami Hajime and Takata Yasuma, the former is founder of Marxian, and the latter is that of Modern economics in Japan. We have developed these two traditional economic inquiries for a long time, and this comprehensiveness may be said as one of our present characteristics.

We are proud of such traditions and our principles of liberty and independence, but we are constantly endeavoring to reform our education, and upgrade our methods and curriculum so as to prepare our students for the contemporary economic and social difficulties. Our research aim is to make advancements in the frontier of economic theories from basic innovative ideas to higher mathematical computational analysis, and also investigate the ideal conditions of sustainable economic development in the 21st century. The economic growth potential of East Asia is also within our scope of interests. We must challenge and try to solve the many difficult problems that contemporary societies and the world face today. Our graduate school, although started much later than the Faculty, has a number of specialists to encompass almost all fields of economics, economic policy, management, and accounting.

We welcome all students who are ambitious in mastering economics and business management and those interested in refining their own intellect, arts, and nature. For students aspiring to enter the graduate school, we hope for those who will challenge the frontier topics in economics, deepen the heritage of economic and social thought, and aspiring to master the arts of management, administration, accounting etc. from scientific point of view.

For undergraduate students, we offer three different entrance examinations. The first is for high school students who have wide tastes and interests in the human science, the second is for those who have strong tastes and interests in the natural science, and third is for those who have excellent skills in logical (analytical, constructive, and interpretative) arguments.

We also welcome foreign students who are willing to study in our Faculty and Graduate School. We currently have over one hundred foreign students including both undergraduate and graduate students. You can study from a rich, wide, and diverse curriculum acquire up-to-date academic knowledge, and learn many practical skills. Most students belong to seminars where they enjoy personal guidance from faculty members and form social networks in the academic world.

We invite many excellent professors, promising young researchers as well as bright students from all over the world for study and learning and consciously endeavor to become one of the most active centers for education and research in economics and management in the world.
