Professor Kotabe received his PhD in Marketing and International Business from Michigan State University, where he taught international marketing and global sourcing strategy (the interface between R&D, manufacturing, and marketing) at the undergraduate and MBA levels, and international business theory at the PhD level, particularly in the "strategic sourcing" Widely known, among other things, for being a front-runner in the area, he has lectured extensively at various business schools in over 20 countries, worked closely with many multinational companies, and served as an advisor to the UN and World Trade Organization Executive Forum on National Export Strategies.
For this year's business administration seminar at Kyoto University, he will give a special presentation that compares and looks at the management strategies of U.S. and Japanese companies. It is based on several empirical observations derived from a fusion of long-term economic data, R&D expenditures, patent statistics, and patent law. He will discuss the need for a new theory to explain the paradigm shift that has recently developed in the conventional wisdom that existing R&D investment (technology development) is the driving force behind a company's competitive advantage.
