**「The Rise and Fall of the British Nation/イギリス国家の興亡」
イギリス史は、混乱し不安定なヨーロッパの中で、連続性のある島国と見るのが一般的な見方である。対して、エジャトンは、イギリスの政治史は、福祉国家の建設から衰退への対処まで、一連のスムーズな政権運営の歴史であったと説く。エジャートンによれば、1940年代までイギリスは例外的な位置にあり、リベラル、資本主義、反国家主義者、ヨーロッパと世界の貿易と影響力のネットワークの中心にあった。その後、世界的な地位が崩壊するにつれて、初めて、そして短期間ではありましたが、共通の目標、地平線、産業を持った真の成功した国家となり、その後1970年代に欧州連合の一部として、また国際資本の受け入れ国として再び生まれ変わった。驚くべき事例と議論が満載の『イギリス国家の興亡』は、ビジネスと戦争を真剣に受け止める、感傷にとらわれない歴史を提示し、この国とその将来を真剣に再考する時期に極めて重要な書籍である。
