(Title)

"Creating Value and Achieving Sustainability with Smart Manufacturing: Data-driven Control and Business Models"

Abstract:
Designing and operating manufacturing systems that can meet orders in a short time with a high throughput, a highservice level, lower inventory levels and utilize material and energy resources efficiently is the key to competitivenessfor industrial firms. With the recent technological developments, smart manufacturing allows collecting more data frommanufacturing systems in an easier way and controlling them in real time. This talk will introduce the recent researchof Dr. Tan that is aimed at creating value for manufacturers through developing data-driven performance evaluationand control methods and business models.
The talk will first focus on developing algorithms that yield fast and accurate performance evaluation of productionsystems in a data-driven way and using these algorithms in solving different system design problems. This approachcombines stochastic modelling, simulation, and machine learning approaches in a novel way. The second part of thetalk will focus on data-driven decision making for sustainable manufacturing. First, our recent results to improveenergy efficiency in manufacturing by controlling energy modes and production in a data-driven way will be presented. Then, the ongoing research that aims at generating Digital Twins from the process data and using them to supportreuse/renewal/recycling and pricing decisions in Circular Value Chains will be introduced. The last part of the talk willfocus on developing business models for manufacturing and for the Circular Economy. As competition increases, allfirms are searching for new business models to improve their competitiveness, profitability, and sustainability. We willfocus on the business models for a group of producers and circular value chains and discuss how analytical modelsare used to analyze and design these business models.
