(Title):  ”When the Branch Leads the Tree: Understanding Reverse Knowledge Transfer from Indonesian Subsidiaries to Japanese Headquarters”

Abstract : In the midst of complex and rapidly changing global economic challenges, MNCs must integrate the knowledge created by their subsidiaries to remain adaptive. The phenomenon of Reverse Knowledge Transfer (RKT), where headquarters leverage knowledge from subsidiaries, has so far been poorly understood in the context of developing countries in Asia, which are known to be highly centralized, and top-down oriented.

Our research looks at how subsidiaries of Japanese MNCs in Indonesia manage RKT by using a specific model that combines the integration-responsiveness framework. A survey of 114 respondents across 10 Japanese companies in Indonesia informs the empirical analysis

Results reveal that subsidiary autonomy and product localization have a very significant effect on RKT, especially if the subsidiary is deeply embedded in the local environment This research offers novel empirical evidence on understanding how knowledge transfer in developing countries can be optimized for sustainable global competitive advantage.
