(Title)

"Playful Coopetition:Three forms of play-derived organizing for innovations"

Abstract:
Recent research has shown how firms are increasingly turning to the open innovation paradigmor the affectivedimension when creating innovations or novel sources of performance. Similarly, collaboration across firm boundariesand with rivals has also been gaining momentum.
Coopetition, simultaneous presence of competition and collaboration, is an activity strategically undertaken by largecorporations or small and medium enterprises that have certain antecedents that make the necessary trust andcoordination possible. Recent studies have also observed that in certain cases, coopetition may take place on a moreinterpersonal level, permitted by the companies involved in it. While earlier research has predominantly suggestedthat coopetition is a strategic, rational situation defined as calculated risk-taking in a game theory sense, in this paperwe argue coopetition to also be play-derived. This longitudinal study investigated coopetition in the Finnish videogame industry from the perspective of play. Interviews and visual data were collected. Our findings reveal three play-derived coopetition practices (play, game, and gamification as organizing for innovations) that extend the current bodyof knowledge on innovations and coopetition. Implications for theory and practice are also discussed.
