FY2024 the 6th Economic and Business History Seminar
Title:
"International Expansion of Japanese Convenience Stores: Beyond Modernization of Distribution"
Abstract:
The convenience store, which originated in the United States, was introduced to Japan in the late 1960s, where it underwent unique development and has since become a familiar part of life for people around the world. When, where, why, and how did Japanese convenience stores, such as 7-Eleven, expand internationally? What challenges did they face in different business environments, and how were these challenges addressed? This study examines the characteristics of Japanese convenience stores, their development process, the existence of any competitive advantages, and the challenges they face and how they respond to them.
