(Title)
"Conducting Research on Culture, Psychology and Organization Studies: Challenges and Opportunities"
Abstract:
In this seminar I will provide an overview of my research on how individuals' perceptions of themselves, and the world, influence their behavior in the process of value creation. The complex phenomena that interest mespan macro-level notions of culture perceived at the individual level, and then translated into organization-leveloutcomes--requiring me to seek out relevant theory in the domains of psychology, social psychology, sociology, and beyond. I will discuss some of the challenges (and opportunities!) encountered in this interdisciplinary work and thenhighlight two projects. The first is a conceptual paper that integrates work from multiple fields to present fourapproaches management scholars can adopt in their studies of organizations within and across cultural contexts. Thispaper represents the important behind-the-scenes work that enabled our 2022 publication on identity-society(mis)alignment and venture orientation (with Marc Gruber in AMJ). The second project I will highlight is theintroduction of a construct called entrepreneurial self-legitimacy (ESL), which is the subject of a data collection effortI'm beginning here with scholars at the Kyoto University Graduate School of Management.
