Economic Growth and Income Distribution: Facing Real Economy Beyond Schools

Since the beginning of economics, economic growth and income distribution have been the most important theme of economics. In recent years too, slowdown of economic growth and widening of income gap are thought to be problems of advanced countries. With the tradition of Faculty of Economics, Kyoto University that values diverse schools, neoclassical, Keynesian, and post-Keynesian researchers who are active at the forefront meet together in one place, present their researches, and discuss economic growth and income distribution beyond schools.

Event Report

On 24th and 25th August 2019, at Hokei Lecture Room 4, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics Main Building, Kyoto University Faculty of Economics The 100th Year Anniversary International Conference Series “Economic Growth and Income Distribution: Facing Real Economy Beyond Schools” was held.

The international conference began with greetings from Dean, Prof. Masahiko Egami as the representative of the Faculty of Economics, Kyoto University, greetings from Prof. Charles Yuji Horioka (Kobe University) as the representative of speakers, and opening remarks from Prof. Hiroaki Sasaki. Domestic and oversea researchers (13 speakers and 13 chairpersons) who are internationally active in the field of economic growth and income distribution gathered at the same place, and presented their researches. Every presentation concerns a cutting-edge theoretical or empirical research on economic growth and income distribution, and hence, the participants listened to their presentations enthusiastically. At the questions and answers sessions after their presentations, very active discussions were conducted beyond schools. Over two days, there were 114 participants from both inside and outside of Kyoto University. Throughout, the international conference was fulfilling, exciting, and hence, successful in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Faculty of Economics, Kyoto University.

After the first day’s session, the reception was held at the restaurant of Kyoto University, and the participants deepened their friendship through chats. At the reception, Vice-Dean, Prof. Katsutoshi Wakai said a few words as the representative of the Faculty of Economics, Kyoto University, Prof. Kazuo Mino (Doshisha University), Prof. Masahiko Itaki (Ritsumeikan University), and Prof. Makoto Saito (Nagoya University) made congratulatory addresses, Prof. Takekazu Iwamoto made a chant for a kagami biraki (a sake barrel opening ceremony), Prof. Shinichi Nishiyama made a toast.
