International Collaborative Graduate School Program

Based on the “Japan Gateway: Kyoto University Top Global Program” initiative, Kyoto University has established the “Top Global Course” and “Joint / Double Degree Programs” which involve international collaborative courses and joint-supervision. Implemented in collaboration with several of the world’s leading universities, these international cooperative education programs form an important part of the efforts of Kyoto University to provide outstanding international graduate education.

The Graduate School of Economics, together with the Graduate School of Letters, and the Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (Division of Natural Resource Economics), has created the “Asian Platform for Global Sustainability & Transcultural Studies (AGST) ” in order to promote the internationalization of research and education across the Graduate Schools.

International Joint Master Degree Program

A joint degree program is a single degree program established in close collaboration with two or more overseas partner universities who jointly confer a single degree to students who complete the program.

Together with the University of Glasgow and the University of Barcelona, the Graduate School of Economics at Kyoto University offers an International Master’s Joint Degree Program in Global Markets, Local Creativities (GLOCAL program).

Double Degree Program

A double degree is a study program based on an agreement between Kyoto University and an overseas university in which both universities grant their own degree to participating students provided they satisfy each university’s completion requirements. Compared to a conventional degree at a single university, a double degree program has significant extra value, providing participants with additional high-quality learning and mobility opportunities.

The Graduate School of Economics of Kyoto University also offers a double degree program together with the University of Glasgow as part of its doctoral program (Researcher Program). The double degree program focuses on the research fields of social, economic and business history, and students who participate study at both universities during this four-year program, successful completion of which results in the award of two doctoral degrees, one from each university.

“AGST Top Global Course” and “Global Course” Certificates

In addition to our “East Asia Sustainable Economic Development Studies” International Graduate Program (available at MA and PhD levels and provided in English), the Graduate School of Economics also engages in international education efforts aimed at graduate students enrolled in our regular program. In this regard, the Graduate School of Economics invites world renowned scholars to deliver courses at Kyoto University, conducts international co-supervision and guidance of graduate student research, runs several overseas dispatch programs and field trips, etc. From 2017, graduate students who actively participated in such international educational activities have been able to obtain a “AGST TOP Global Course Certificate” in recognition of their efforts.

Furthermore, in 2018 the Faculty of Economics has established the “Global Course” for undergraduate students in which they receive a “Global Course” certificate based on their assessed English skills and the attainment of sufficient credits from courses offered in English. Another requirement for completing this course is that undergraduate students engage in a semester of overseas academic exchange with one of Kyoto University’s exchange partners. In this way the Graduate School of Economics is proactively promoting international exchange with universities outside of Japan.
