授業のテーマ: 英語で読む世界の農業・食料・環境・開発問題

授業の目的:英Guardian紙やBBC News Website等のupdateな英文記事を用いながら、生きた英語の表現方法、簡潔なロジック/レトリックの展開方法を学ぶ。農業、食料、環境、開発にテーマを絞る予定。たんに英文を読み理解するだけでなく、背景にある諸問題を含め、当該テーマを政治経済学の視点から構造的・歴史的・批判的に分析することにも心掛けたい。

授業計画と内容: Guardian紙は農業・食料問題や途上国開発問題に関する鋭い批判的分析に定評がある。Weekly版に掲載された当該テーマに関する記事を中心に読み進めていく。適当な記事がない場合は他メディアの記事を用いることもある。
  • 記事の一部を使って初見リーディングを行い、構文解釈に頼らない英文速読の能力を高める。
  • 記事の残りは宿題とするので、参加者は一通り目を通してくること。次回の授業では、英文解釈上重要と思われる箇所、内容上重要と思われる論点について解説を加えるとともに、内容にもとづくグループ討論にも取り組みたい。
  • 既出単語について小テストを実施する。

成績評価の方法:成績は発言(30)、小テスト(30) に期末テストの結果(40)を総合的に加味して評価する。

履修要件:履修者が多い場合は選抜を実施する。英英辞典(Longman Contemporary English、Collins Coubildなど)を持参すること。英英辞典機能がついていれば電子辞書でも構わないが、可能であれば辞書本体が望ましい。

授業のテーマ: [前期] 批判的社会科学におけるアグリビジネス研究の実際:環境主義への資本の対応

授業の目的: 環境規制下におけるアグリビジネスの市場対応・技術対応を政治経済学と社会学の視点から理論的・実証的に理解しながら,社会科学研究に必要な英文読解力を養うこと

授業計画と内容: 今日の多国籍企業が新自由主義的グローバリズムの恩恵に浴していることは否定できないが,ナショナル,リージョナル,インターナショナルなレベルでの様々な環境主義的な公的規制を無視しうるほどの絶対者ではない。多国籍アグリビジネス企業の環境・食品安全規制(具体的には農薬とバイオテクノロジー)への市場対応・技術対応を実証的素材に取り上げ,同時に農業社会学や科学技術社会学,制度経済学等の理論的・方法論的成果に積極的に学びながら,伝統的な政治経済学的アプローチによっては十全に捉えきれなかった資本の柔軟性・多様性・複雑性・革新性の意義(環境主義の市場制度化と技術革新の進展)と限界(資本主義的な制約ゆえの新たな矛盾の創出)に大胆に切り込んだ以下の文献を講読する。KeesJansen and Sietze Vellema, eds. (forthcoming) Agribusiness and Society:Corporate Responses to Environmentalism, Market Opportunities and PublicRegulation, Zed Books. このうち,序章(Agribusiness and Environmentalism: The Politicsof Technology Innovation and Regulation)と第1部(Agribusiness Responses toEnvironmentalism in the Market)を取り上げる。

※なお、実際には上記テキスト第1部各章の序論/結論部分のみを読んだ。これに加え、時事英語に慣れることを目的に、英Guardian紙ならびにBBCニュース(UK版、WorldService版)の記事を取り上げた。後期もこの方式を踏襲する予定。

成績評価の方法: 重要箇所や難解な箇所については精読(逐語訳)を学生に課すこともあるが,基本的には内容の理解に重点を置く。したがって,学生には,通常のゼミナールで行っている輪読形式と同様,担当部分の内容(要旨)を正確かつ簡潔に報告し,疑問点や論点を提示することが求められる。成績は,その報告内容と議論への参加態度に,日常的な出席状況を加味して総合的に評価する。試験の実施は参加者数と授業の進行具合をみながら決める。

教科書: 開講当初はプリントを配布するが,人数が確定次第,上記の文献を共同購入してもらう。

授業の目的: 経済英語Aに引き続き,境規制下におけるアグリビジネスの市場対応・技術対応を政治経済学と社会学の視点から理論的・実証的に理解しながら,社会科学研究に必要な英文読解力を養うこと
