Application and Selection Procedure:
- For your application, please carefully read the Application Form, the Application Guidelines, and the Frequently Asked Questions and Answers.
If you still have questions, you may contact us at eac [at] econ.kyoto-u.ac.jp. We only respond to those inquiries to which answers cannot be found in the Guidelines and FAQ. - The application period is from 1st to 30th April 2017. The digital version of application documents (see below) must be sent to the Programme Committee’s e-mail (eac[at]econ.kyoto-u.ac.jp).
- Those applicants who are required to go through the AAO screening process, have to make contact with the AAO in advance as well as with the Programme Committee. Please note that it will take a few weeks to receive feedback from the AAO office, and therefore the AAO procedure should be started at least two weeks before the deadline.
- In the meanwhile, the applicants are required to communicate with and get an approval from their prospective supervisor(s), who must be chosen from the faculty and collaborative members of the Graduate School of Economics. (Faculty Members List)
- Only after applicants successfully get an approval from their prospective supervisor(s), they may submit application documents to the Programme Committee via email.
- In case applicants cannot find an appropriate supervisor(s), they can be advised by the Programme Committee on a possible and appropriate supervisor(s) based on their research proposal. In that event, such applicants can submit application documents via email to the Programme Committee by 30th April 2017 without naming a prospective supervisor(s), but must obtain a prospective supervisor(s)’s approval according to the advice by the Programme Committee by 16th May 2017.
- Applicants who have gone through the supervisor matching process, they will be contacted by the Programme Committee to submit a hard copy of the submitted documents to the Student Affairs Office of the Graduate School of Economics (Yoshida Honmachi, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City, 606-8501, JAPAN) by 29th May 2017.

The detailed instruction will be given to the students in August or September 2017.
- Applicants who are already granted the MEXT Scholarship for master’s degree studies at other universities, can extend the scholarship for doctoral degree studies so as to apply for our doctoral programme. Please ask necessary procedures at the administrative office in your university.
- Applicants of the PhD programme are not qualified to apply for the “University Recommendation” category of the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship. Therefore, successful applicants would have to enroll as privately-funded students unless they received a MEXT Scholarship under “Embassy Recommendation”, or an equivalent scholarship offered by their governments.
