FYI: Application Procedures for Master’s Programme (2017 Enrolment)

Number of Applicants to be Admitted

  • Approximately 8 international students are admitted to the programme each year.
  • Top 4 students of them selected through the application and selection procedure [A] are eligible to receive the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, or MEXT) Scholarship.
  • Other successful applicants beyond these 4 need to be privately funded or apply for other scholarship by themselves. Those who still have the will to enroll the programme are required to go through another procedure [B].

Eligibility for Application

  • Applicants must satisfy one of the following qualifications.  1) The applicant has graduated from university at the time of his or her application, or is expected to graduate from university before his or her enrolment to the programme.  2) The applicant is recognized by the Graduate School of Economics to possess an academic ability that is equivalent or superior to those who meet the first qualification, and is at least 22 years old at the time of his or her enrolment to the programme.
  • Applicants who are enrolled or were enrolled at universities in China, Hong Kong or Taiwan are required to go through the screening process by Admissions Assistance Office (AAO). Please see following web page for more detail.

  • Applicants from the countries or regions which do not have any official diplomatic relations with Japan such as Taiwan, Palestine are not eligible to apply for MEXT Scholarship.
  • Those who are currently studying and will be staying in Japan during the process of application, selection, and admission procedures are not eligible to receive MEXT scholarship.

Application and Selection Procedure [A]:

  • For your application, please carefully read the Application Form, the Application Guidelines, and the Frequently Asked Questions and Answers. If you still have questions, you may contact us at eac [at] econ.kyoto-u.ac.jp. We only respond to those inquiries to which answers cannot be found in the Guidelines and FAQ.
  • The application period for the preliminary round is from 1st to 30th of November 2016. The digital version of application documents must be sent to the Programme Committee’s e-mail address (eac [at] econ.kyoto-u.ac.jp). Those applicants who are required to go through the AAO screening process have to make a contact with the AAO in advance as well as with the Programme Committee’s e-mail address. Please note that it will take a few weeks to receive a feedback from AAO office, and therefore the AAO procedure should be started at least two weeks before the deadline.
  • After examining the submitted documents by the middle of December 2016, the shortlisted applicants will be contacted by the Programme Committee and asked to submit a hard copy of the submitted documents to the Student Affairs Office of the Graduate School of Economics (Yoshida Honmachi, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto 606-8501, JAPAN) by 24th December 2016.
  • In the meantime, the applicants are required to communicate with and get an approval from their prospective supervisor(s), who must be chosen from the faculty and collaborative members of the Graduate School of Economics(Faculty Members List). The applicants can be advised by the Programme Committee on possible and appropriate supervisor(s) based on the research proposal submitted by the applicants. Only those applicants who successfully get an approval from their prospective supervisor(s) by 15th January 2017 can go on to the next stage of the selection procedures.
  • A team of faculty staff will interview each candidate via Skype from the end of January to early February. Those successfully selected will be informed of the decision on 13th February 2017. All procedures will be done in English.
  • Top 4 students out of those admitted to the programme are eligible to receive the MEXT Scholarship. The eligibility includes a minimum level of GPA set by the Ministry of Education. Those successfully selected will be recommended to the Japanese Government as candidates for the Scholarship. For that procedure, the candidates have to submit additional documents (to be informed). The Japanese Government examines the documents of the applicants recommended by Kyoto University and selects the recipients of the MEXT Scholarship. Those finally selected will be informed of this decision in the middle of July 2017.

Application Documents to be Submitted

  1. Application Form
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Reasons for Application, Research Proposal at Kyoto University, and Plan after Completion; written in English. Maximum five A4 pages, including three A4 pages (about 1500 words) of Research Proposal.
  4. Transcript of Academic Record of the previous two-year undergraduate study from the institute attended.
    Those who have already finished a graduate programme, please submit all of the transcripts. Those who are currently enrolled in a graduate programme, please submit all available transcripts to date.
    In case the original transcript is in languages other than Japanese and English, a translated document in Japanese or English must be attached.
  5. Applicants whose first language is other than English are required to submit a photocopy of official notice of TOEFL or IELTS scores taken within two years before the application deadline.
  6. Certificate(s) of Graduation from the institute(s) previously attended. If you are a currently enrolled student, please include a certificate of expected graduation. In case the original certificate is in languages other than English and Japanese, a translated document in English or Japanese must be attached.
  7. Letter of Recommendation from an applicant’s supervisor, the dean, or the head of the institute attended.The letter can be sent directly from an applicant’s supervisor to the Programme Committee.
  8. Reference Paper such as graduation thesis or an equivalent paper. If the paper is written in languages other than Japanese and English, a translated summary in English must be attached.

 

Application and Selection Procedure [B]:

  • Those who achieve a passing score on the documentary/interview examination but left out of the selection for the MEXT Scholarship will be exempted from taking additional examinations to enrol the programme. However, examination fee (JPY30,000), admission fee (JPY282,000), and tuition fee (JPY535,800/year) need to be paid.
  • Only after the examination fee is paid by the due date, those successful applicants can request a letter of acceptance in case of need to apply for other scholarships. Examination fee is not refundable in any case.
  • Any students can apply for the tuition fee waiver scheme, a JASSO’s Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students, and/or other scholarships by private foundations.
  • Detailed instructions will be given to those successful applicants in the middle of February 2017.
